Think Graduate Student Achievement

From engineering to art history and in scores of disciplines in between, Binghamton graduate students are excelling. Below is just a sampling of recent awards won by graduate students in these two departments.

Engineering

  • PhD student Alex Volynkin and coauthors, Victor Skormin, Douglas Summerville, and James Moronski, were awarded the Best Paper Award for their paper entitled "Evaluation of Run-Time Detection of Self-Replication in Binary Executable Malware" at the 7th Annual IEEE Information Assurance Workshop.

  • Jozef Sofka's PhD dissertation entitled, "New Generation of Gimbals Systems for Aerospace Applications," was chosen as the winner of the Distinguished Dissertation Award at Binghamton University in the category of Engineering & Applied Science. His faculty advisor was Professor Victor Skormin.

  • Ugur Cem Hasar received a Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Research. His research involves the study of an accurate technique to investigate electrical permittivity over a range of water/cement ratios and its correlation to the mechanical strength of the final materials. His faculty advisor is Professor Roger Westgate.

  • Jane Alberdeston Coralin co-authored the novel Sister Chicas with Lisa Alvarado and Ann Cardinal. The novel was published by New American Library, an imprint of Penguin Books, in 2006.
  • Lydia Melvin's first collection of poetry, South of Here, came out in the autumn of 2005 from New Issues Press.
  • Katherine Arnoldi won the 2006 Juniper Prize for her collection of short stories, All Things Are Labor. The book has just (autumn 2007) been published by the University of Massachusetts Press.
  • Jennifer Pashley has just published States, a collection of her short stories from Lewis Clark Press.
  • Jeremy Schraffenberger has had his collection of poetry, St. Joe's Passion, accepted for publication by Etruscan Press.
