Jane Gottlieb, VP of library and information resources at Juilliard
Jane Gottlieb '76 says she learns something every minute in her work with scholars and musicians at Juilliard in New York.
"It's an enormous responsibility and an incredible privilege, taking care of some of the world's greatest treasures," said Gottlieb, vice president of library and information services at Juilliard.
She's been at the world-famous conservatory for 20 years, and knows there's more learning ahead.
The library received coverage in The New York Times in March after billionaire hedge fund manager Bruce Kovner added to Juilliard's treasure trove. He donated 139 original music manuscripts, which, according to Gottlieb, is an extraordinary collection spanning hundreds of years and holding great value to scholars. Composers include Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss and Stravinsky.
She said Juilliard is building a new room to hold these materials; construction should be done in September 2009. The library is creating digital copies of the manuscripts that should be available on line by the end of the year.
Some of the world's best and brightest musicians aren't content to wait that long. Gottlieb has received dozens of requests from people wanting to see the manuscripts.
"Materials such as these come alive at a place such as Juilliard where the works are performed all the time by students," she said. "To have these materials on site enhances and supports everything we do."
Gottlieb also gets support from several Binghamton graduates who are part of the administration at Juilliard: Jon Rosenhein '79, vice president of finance and administration; Christine (Metz) Todd '88, associate vice president for budget and planning; Sabrina Tanbara '92, director of student affairs; Jeremy Pinquist '98, information technology network manager.
